The Need and Importance of Simulation in Nursing Education

In the recent times simulation-based medical learning has emerged as a new teaching strategy that allow students to apply their theoretical knowledge and skills in a lifelike clinical environment. In this students get a chance to participate in the simulated patient-care scenarios wherein they can gain exposure, experience, refine their skills without causing any harm to a live patient. 

As per the reports of National League for Nursing (NLN), these three were considered as main reasons how simulation based medical learning gives students an edge:

• The use of simulation in the nursing education provides wide range of patient-care experiences to the students that can otherwise pose a risk to patients.
• It was observed, students who participate in paper/pencil case study do not develop as many problem solving features when compared to the students who are actively involved in simulation-based learning.
• Further, it was concluded nursing students who are engaged in learning through simulation based scenarios reported a higher confidence level when it comes to practically implementing patient care in contrast to students who were restricted to theoretic academia only.

Thus points mentioned above state that simulation- based training is necessary in nursing to promote patient safety, provide effective patient care and to prevent medication errors in the clinical setting. 

Simulation based training provide learners with an opportunity to experience real- time clinical situations within a safe and supervised setting that does not poses any kind of risk to patient and  promotes decision-making and critical thinking among students.

With all these key points, we can conclude the significance of simulation as a strong emerging technique for nursing education including undergrad and postgrad instruction.
