The Need and Importance of Simulation in Nursing Education

In the recent times simulation-based medical learning has emerged as a new teaching strategy that allow students to apply their theoretical knowledge and skills in a lifelike clinical environment. In this students get a chance to participate in the simulated patient-care scenarios wherein they can gain exposure, experience, refine their skills without causing any harm to a live patient.

Importance of Simulation-based Training

As per the reports of National League for Nursing (NLN), these three were considered as main reasons how simulation based medical learning gives students an edge:

  • The use of simulation in the nursing education provides wide range of patient-care experiences to the students that can otherwise pose a risk to patients.
  • It was observed, students who participate in paper/pencil case study do not develop as many problem solving features when compared to the students who are actively involved in simulation-based learning.
  • Further, it was concluded nursing students who are engaged in learning through simulation based scenarios reported a higher confidence level when it comes to practically implementing patient care in contrast to students who were restricted to theoretic academia only.

Thus points mentioned above state that simulation- based training is necessary in nursing to promote patient safety, provide effective patient care and to prevent medication errors in the clinical setting.
Simulation based training provide learners with an opportunity to experience real- time clinical situations within a safe and supervised setting that does not poses any kind of risk to patient and  promotes decision-making and critical thinking among students.

With all these key points, we can conclude the significance of simulation as a strong emerging technique for nursing education including undergrad and postgrad instruction.

INSCOL - Center for Continuous Education (CCE) has now initiated its efforts to provide simulation-based learning for the students, giving healthcare professionals a chance to practice under unique medical situations and clinical scenarios, which are generally difficult to access in a hospital environment, through its advanced clinical simulation lab at Chandigarh and part task labs in Bangalore, Chennai, Kochi and Kottayam.

Swine Flu Outbreak in India: 2015

This year the total number of deaths owing to swine flu has doubled compared to earlier year taking the toll to 624.

As per the latest report by Ministry of Health & Family Welfare, death toll has reached to be 812 in this year as of 22 February, 2015 in India

Dr. Suranjit Chatterjee, a senior consultant, internal medicine, at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, says "As it started getting warmer; we expected cases to come down. But this year the trend is different."

As per the Data assembled by Health Ministry, Rajasthan has reported 5,528 cases reported in total out of which 261 persons fell prey to the H1N1 virus. While in M.P, 1,010 people were affected by the virus and 153 lives were claimed. In Punjab disease has claimed 42 lives and in national capital number 10 persons has died whereas the no. of affected persons has risen to 2,891.

How The Swine Flu Virus Works

What is it?

Swine Flu (influenza) is a highly contagious virus, is a respiratory disease that was found affecting respiratory tract of pigs. Earlier the virus was spread only among pigs and has now become fatal even for humans.

Influenza Virus is highly infectious and spread quickly between persons through mucus, saliva and air. Infected people must cover the nose and mouth while sneezing or coughing, as it can easily spread numerous germs over the air.

People who are most vulnerable to the disease includes pregnant women, adults above the age of 60, children below 3 years of age, people with some medical conditions like with lung disease, diabetes, asthma, or people with weak immunity system are at a higher risk.

Symptoms

Swine flu has similar symptoms to any seasonal flu such as fever, vomiting, sore throat, headache, and in some cases diarrhea as well. If any person develops these symptoms, swine flu can only be diagnosed only through a test that is conducted in a specialized laboratory. Tamiflu, is the only recommended anti-viral drug that is used to treat swine flu among humans. Visit this blog to learn more about Swine Flu virus and it's prevention tips.

Continuing Nursing Education has Advantages. Such as...

Continuing Nursing Education
Advantages of Continuing Nursing Education

Nursing professionals find it quite difficult to manage their time and spend some money to pursue further education while being in to a full-time job. However, despite the challenges, there are advantages continuing the learning curve and specializing the field of profession with a bachelor or master degree.

Let’s talk about the advantages a professional nurse can have by continuing nursing education -

1. Acquire More Knowledge

Listing this benefit on 1st position is unanimous. A specialized resource of knowledge is one of the most useful advantage a nurse can get to improve the lives of their patients on everyday basis. Advancements in the fields of medicines, healthcare and new diseases are constantly being discovered, along with updated techniques for the treatment and new medications. Thus, it becomes imperative to stay abreast of current research and happenings in the world of medical science to ensure patients are treated well and given the most up-to-date treatment.

2. Wider Opportunities in a Nursing Career

Continuing education helps a nurse professional to become eligible to progress in respective genre of practice and attain better positions throughout the career. A nurse specialized with a master degree can switch from a typical hospital job into a research job. Therefore, gaining a degree will bring opportunities for a nurse professional to move into a specialty career, like pediatrics, cardiology, oncology or being a nurse practitioner with a family practice.

3. Continuing Nursing Education will Benefit in Future Licensing

There are some states that has a mandate for Registered Nurses to renew their licenses to stay certified. Only by continuing education classes may help them in the renewal of certification on the other hand, nurses gain decision-making and critical care skills through these classes. Apart from licensing and renewal, Continuing Nursing Education makes them eligible for positions such as head or staff nurse, department chief, or administrative manager.

4. Hospitals Look for Nurses with Specialization to Hire

Yes, that’s true. Healthcare employers prefer nurses that can manage a variety of tasks professionally and can be able to multi-task. Nurses with specialization degrees often have better knowledge and understanding for the job responsibilities and are very often promoted to supervisory positions with better facilities and higher pay packages.

Fur a nursing professional, there can be number of advantages and benefits that a healthcare employer or the industry have in their reservoir. The only thing is that the nurses should understand the importance of continuing education and achieving better positions through better jobs.

INSCOL in collaboration with leading Universities/Colleges in Canada/UK/USA/AUS/NZ offers a wide range of exclusive Nursing Programs in:
